Course Information
Course Contents
This program aims to provide new entrants, and those who require Transport Canada qualifications to operate small commercial vessels, with the knowledge and skills to obtain the Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) license. The course is theoretical and does not, under Transport Canada’s standard, require practical boat work. RelyOn Nutec can include practical boat handling and other skills if requested. Additional costs may apply.
This course meets the requirement for minimum training of operators of commercial vessels, other than tugs and fishing vessels, up to 5 gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, and for fishing vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length engaged on a near coastal, class 2 (including an inland voyage on Lake Superior or Lake Huron) or a sheltered waters voyage. The course meets the requirements of Transport Canada.
During the scheduled SVOP courses we will use synchronous delivery over 4 days (26 hours). The instructor will be available before and after the course delivery either by phone or email.

Remote Delivery
Participants are required to have their video on at all times and the instructor may ask them to mute their microphones at different times. If a participant needs to have a bathroom break simply send a private note in the chat to the instructor to say they are leaving the course for a few minutes as they would in a regular classroom situation.
Participation is required at 100% for the course. The participants must leave their video on at all times to prove that they are in class.
For certain skills the students would be required to submit a short video of the work that they have done explaining how they performed a specific skill. This may include showing how they measured distance on a chart or identifying predetermined marks etc.
For the navigation exercise the students will be required to submit their completed work within 2 hours of the termination of the online instruction. The instructor will be continuously available during that time period in case students do have any questions. Students will be provided with a chart that corresponds to the exercises as well as the required dividers and parallel rules or Portland plotter.
